Hamlet by New York Circus Project transforms Shakespeare's classic into a contemporary acrobatic performance. Hamlet will be in Philadelphia, PA from July 24th to 28th at FringeArts (140 N Christopher Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19106).
“Breaking the boundaries of art forms and time, ‘Hamlet’ ultimately traversed the lines of what a Shakespeare play should look like—revealing an undiscovered terrain within the arts world waiting for interdisciplinary talents to fill it with color.” (Columbia Spectator.) With cast and creative team members that are alumni of Cirque du Soleil, the 7 Fingers, and L'Ecole Nationale de Cirque de Montreal, Hamlet creates a unique and memorable rendition of a classic where the lines between realism and internal monologue blur, using circus to elevate the emotional and narrative stakes of Shakespeare’s famous story.
This blend of circus and text changes the play’s tempo and allows for a visceral exploration of the emotional conflict at hand. Hamlet’s delirium materializes in explosive group acrobatic tableaus; Ophelia’s life flashes before her eyes underwater during a last-breath contortion number; and the ghost of Hamlet’s father performs aerial dance above young Hamlet.
New York Circus Project is a contemporary circus company that brings theatrical classics to life through acrobatic choreography. "Turning one of the most famous plays in the English canon into something utterly creative and original” (Bwog), New York Circus Project's debut tour is not to be missed.
